Hands On Leads to Deeper Learning (Gr 6-10 Math)
Objective: This session is designed for Middle and High School math teachers who want to experience hands-on learning activities appropriate for grade 6, 7 and 8 mathematics.
Description: In this session, you will learn, first 'hand', the value of hands-on learning tools and manipulatives in mathematics. Using objects to help students touch and see the math can help remove some of the mystery around abstract formulas and algorithms. I have found that manipulatives:
engage all learners
make the math tangible and visible
give students an anchor point for recalling abstract concepts and formulae
Advice for Implementation: Give yourself permission to play the part of a student who experiments with ideas and makes sense of concepts. Be willing to think about mathematics in a new way, other than traditional "pencil and paper" approaches.
